The PCB substrate is an insulating material that is typically only a few millimeters thick. One of the most important decisions in PCB design is deciding how large should you make the lateral dimensions of the board. The lateral dimensions of a PCB are often limited by the final device casing it will be placed in, the size of electrical components to be placed on the board, and the width of the copper tracks. The dimensions you provide are the determinants of success.
Allegro PCB Editor offers an environment created specifically for working with dimensions, which is known as the Dimension Environment. This environment provides you with enhanced dimensioning capabilities. The Dimension Environment gives access to various dimensioning features and modes for creating and editing dimensions.
You can invoke the Dimension Environment by selecting Manufacture > Dimension Environment.
When in the Dimension Environment, clicking the RMB will show a pop-up menu containing relevant commands and options for dimensioning. Below is the list of some of the dimension types available in Allegro PCB Editor:
- Linear dimension
- Datum dimension
- Angular dimension
- Leader line
- Diametrical leader
- Radial leader
- Balloon leader
- Chamfer leader
The Dimensioning Parameters dialog contains all options related to dimensions. If a global parameter is changed, it applies to all new dimensions as well as existing dimensions.
This document is intended for Allegro PCB Editor users who want to understand the Dimension Environment and its capabilities.
